Fig tree question?

My friend cut a piece of his fig tree off and gave it to me. It is just a couple leaves and is growing great in a bowl with water. When should I transport it into soil?

Fig tree question?
As soon as its almost a foot. Then transplant into a a pot and keep it in the pot until spring.. Personally I wouldn't plant it out side ever.. Move it inside and out depending on the season and it will prosper with the slightly warmer climate during the winter.. I'm not sure if fig trees originated in Italy but they do seem to prosper with the slightly warmer winters and little snow.
Reply:You can now but remember that the roots are shallow and you have to keep them moist. Figs grow fast so I would put it in a pot first and let it get bigger to better withstand the outside elements. About 8-10" should be a good height. Of course, in cold climates, spring is always the best time to plant outside.
