I have a Fig Tree?

We have a fig tree in our front garden, it looks great and has loads of figs growing on it.

But hoe do I know when they are ready to eat??

I only eat figs in them fig roll biscuits - my kids love 'em but they call them dog biscuits lol. I would love my kids to eat them in their natural form, as they have apples cherries and grapes from our garden as well as organic veg.

Also I did see another question like mine, but my figs are green at the moment, will they turn purple or is it inside that is purple??

someone people help before this years crop is wasted too.

I have a Fig Tree?
Figs grow two crops a year in hot countries, which ours isn't. So in this country they are ready to eat when they turn purple and are soft and at this time of year the left over fruit will over winter to become next years crop. You will lose some fruit but most will over winter.
Reply:I have been picking figs all summer, they grow to about the size of a golf ball and the skin turns brown, then they are ready for eating.

You will be lucky for any of your green figs to ripen at this late stage.

They need full sun to grow and ripen.
Reply:there are different types of fig trees. some of them have fruits that turn purple other stay green even when ripe. the best way to understand if the fig is ready to eat is to try one and see if it tastes sweet and is reddish inside.
Reply:i hate to be gross but when they fell like men's b a _ _ s they are ripe, and they turn purple --yes, you can even add the fruit inside the skin to smoothies
Reply:we have 4 fig trees at work and they are fruiting all this year still have fruit unfortunately we are not allowed to pick the fruit

but it's ripe when it is soft but not squashy when you give it a gentle squeeze
Reply:If you live in the south and the tree is against a south facing wall you may be lucky enough to get ripe fruit. Otherwise you need to put it in a green house.
Reply:'fraid they don't always ripen in our climate, the fruit should feel soft if you give it a gentle squeeze. if it's ripe, just pull off the peel and scoff all the middle . It can be a bit messy but it's worth it fresh figs are yummy. My neighbour's have a tree growing by an old well they told me figs like to get their roots near some water and they prune it quite hard every year as soon as the fruit has stopped ripening, yes right some types stay green when ripe
Reply:wow i wish i could..i mean i love fig biccies to (i lol at your childrens wording for them!) but in all honesty i dont have a figgin clue!
