Can anyone tell me the name of the desert growing fig ??
Ficus carica is the eating fig that grows around the mediterranean.

You'll find a huge number of species here...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tre...

scroll down to Moraceae: Mulberry Family and there are links for most of the ficus species.
Reply:Fig trees are in the Genus Ficus. There are over 750 species of Ficus. About 200 of these species are indigenous to Africa, Madagscar %26amp; the Middle East. Only about 20 or 30 species will actually thrive in dry/desert conditions.

I grow %26amp; collect many rare species of Ficus strictly for their ornamental beauty. Most of my Ficus trees are grown in containers ~ they make for remarkable bonsais.

If you are looking for Ficus trees that produce edible fruits you must make your selection at a local nursery. The pollination process for figs is entirely dependent on wasps which only live in the Ficus tree's endemic area. Without

pollination, there will be no fruit.

This works well when growing Ficus as ornamentals, but not so well if you want figs to eat. Oh and very few Ficus actually produce edible fruit.

Adriano's Figtrees online has wonderful info on many

exotic %26amp; hardy varieties of edible figs. Check out their site ~ you can really see that they have a passion for figs and they will graciously give you good info on growing figs in your area!
Reply:Fruiting Fig Well Suited to Desert Landscapes

The fruiting fig (Ficus carica) is an excellent fruit and ornamental tree for desert landscapes. That's because many of the common figs, including the ones we grow here in Tucson are native to hot, dry regions of the Mediterranean.
